Division 1 Champions
Huge congratulations to our girls football team who are the Division 1 champions for the first time ever. Following the final, played in Tinryland, the girls are history makers and are a credit to the school, their parents and Bagenalstown.
The game itself was a cracker with Queen of the Universe getting off to a great start. Forwards Ali Cushen, Eve Sinnott and Pheobe Reddy worked hard in the half forward line and were helped by Sara Clarke, Shona Geoghegan and Emma Lillis in the full forward line. Showing great skill and workrate, the girls scored 4-2 in the first half with some of the scores coming from midfield where Chloe Beck and Shauna O’Neill covered every blade of grass on the pitch.
Following half time, Gaelscoil came back into the game and scored 3-1 early on. However our backs then played out of their skins to keep them out for the rest of the game. Maeve Lawless was superb at corner back, helped by Molly Dwyer and Emily O’Hara. The full back line were kept on their toes by our goalkeeper Chantelle Kelly, who also made some great saves. The half back line got lots of the ball and Ellie Cody, Rachel Hughes Doherty and captain Roisin Meaney stood strong when they were needed.
At the final whistle there was great excitement as Meadow Reddy, Maryann Hickey and Jessica Tamas joined their teammates to sing Ole Ole with the cup.
Well done girls!
